Phuket Travel Guide – The Exotic Island of Thailand

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations. With its turquoise sea, white sandy beaches, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife, it attracts millions of visitors every year. Whether it’s a honeymoon or a backpacking trip, Phuket offers something for everyone. In this guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of places to visit in Phuket, things to do, food recommendations, and accommodation tips.

When to Visit Phuket?

Phuket has a tropical climate, so it’s warm most of the year. However, there’s a big difference between the rainy and dry seasons:

  • November – April: Dry season. The sea is calmer, and the weather is sunny. This is the peak tourist season.
  • May – October: Monsoon season. Fewer tourists, lower prices, but occasional heavy rains.

The best time to visit for sunny weather and reasonable prices is late November – early March.

Getting to Phuket

Phuket International Airport (HKT) receives direct flights from many countries. From Bangkok, it’s a 1-hour domestic flight. From the airport, you can get to Patong, Kata, or Karon by taxi, minibus, or Grab (Southeast Asia’s version of Uber).

Places to Visit in Phuket

1. Patong Beach

Phuket’s most famous beach. Enjoy the sun and sea during the day, and dive into the nightlife on Bangla Road in the evening. Bars, clubs, and street performances keep the area alive.

We stayed at The Crystal Beach Hotel in Patong. Its walking distance to the beach was a huge convenience. Tuktuks are the most practical way to get around; they usually charge 80 baht, but sometimes agree to 50 baht if you negotiate.

2. Kata and Karon Beaches

Quieter than Patong, perfect for families and couples. Kata Beach’s soft sand and calm waters are ideal for swimming.

3. Big Buddha

Located at one of the highest points on the island, the 45-meter-high Big Buddha is one of Phuket’s landmarks. The view is a treat for photographers.

4. Phi Phi Islands Tour

A 1.5-hour boat trip from Phuket takes you to the world-famous Phi Phi Islands with their stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Maya Bay (from the movie The Beach) is a must-see.

5. James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay)

Famous for its appearance in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun, this island impresses with its limestone cliffs and turquoise waters.

6. Phuket Old Town

Known for its colorful Portuguese-style buildings, boutique cafes, and street art. On Sundays, the Sunday Walking Street Market is perfect for souvenir shopping.

7. Nui Beach – Hidden Paradise

For those who want to escape the crowds and find peace, Nui Beach is a true hidden gem. This small but beautiful beach stands out with its clear waters and surrounding natural beauty. You can relax here or swing on the large swing facing the sea while enjoying the stunning view. Getting there can be a bit challenging (by motorbike or 4x4), but the tranquility and scenery are worth it.

8. Rawai

Located in the south of Phuket, Rawai offers a more local atmosphere away from the tourist crowds. The Rawai Fishing Village is famous for fresh seafood. Early in the morning, fishermen display their catch of the day, and you can have it cooked in the nearby restaurants. I especially recommend eating fish here—it’s one of the best culinary experiences in Phuket in terms of freshness and flavor. From Rawai Beach, you can take longtail boats for day trips to nearby islands. At sunset, walking along the shore is truly peaceful.

Things to Do in Phuket

  • Diving and Snorkeling: Racha Island and the Similan Islands are a paradise for diving enthusiasts.
  • Watch the Sunset: Promthep Cape offers breathtaking sunset views.
  • Thai Massage: Affordable and relaxing massage parlors are everywhere.
  • Try Thai Cuisine: Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, and Mango Sticky Rice are must-tries.
  • Night Markets: Phuket Weekend Market is great for both food and shopping.

Full Moon Party Experience from Phuket (Koh Phangan)

If you want to add an epic nightlife experience to your Phuket trip, the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan is perfect. This world-famous party is held every full moon night and brings thousands of people together to dance on the beach until morning. Colorful light shows, DJ performances, fire dancers, and a tropical atmosphere make it unforgettable.

There’s no direct route from Phuket to Koh Phangan, but you can take a short flight to Koh Samui and then a ferry to Koh Phangan:

  • Phuket – Koh Samui Flight: Around 1 hour. Round-trip tickets are usually about USD 200, which is expensive for the short distance.
  • Koh Samui – Koh Phangan Ferry: 100–200 baht (around USD 3–6). Takes 30–50 minutes.

Accommodation Tip: For the Full Moon Party, definitely choose a place on the beach. That way, you can easily reach the party and enjoy the view in the evening. We stayed at Seaesta Beach Hotel and loved the sunset views from there.

Book your hotel well in advance, as they fill up quickly during the full moon week. While it’s possible to return to Phuket the next day, spending 1–2 days on the island to explore the beaches and waterfalls is much more enjoyable.

Food Recommendations in Phuket

  • Pad Thai: Stir-fried noodles with peanuts, lime, chicken, or shrimp.
  • Tom Yum Goong: Spicy and sour shrimp soup.
  • Som Tum: Spicy papaya salad.
  • Mango Sticky Rice: Sweet mango served with coconut sticky rice.

Accommodation Areas

  • Patong: For nightlife and entertainment.
  • Kata / Karon: For families and a quieter vacation.
  • Kamala / Surin: For luxury resorts and a peaceful setting.
  • Phuket Old Town: For cultural experiences close to the city.

Travel Tips for Phuket

  • Bargain: Haggling is common in street shopping.
  • Rent a Motorbike: An economical way to get around the island.
  • Use Sunscreen: The tropical sun can be intense.
  • Respect Local Culture: Wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders when visiting temples.
