Manila, Taal, and Boracay Travel Guide-Three Faces of the Philippines

Manila, Taal & Boracay Travel Guide: Manila Bay Sunset, Budget Bus to Taal & Boracay Station 2

Discover Manila’s historic core and legendary Manila Bay sunset, cross the lake to Taal’s rim (by foot or horse), then unwind on Boracay’s sugar-white sands.

Manila – The Heart of the Philippines

The capital blends centuries of history with modern bustle. It can feel hectic at first, yet it rewards wanderers with character, cuisine and layered stories.

Intramuros: A Walk Through Time

Within the old Spanish-era walls of Intramuros, cobblestones, churches and fortifications evoke another century. Don’t miss San Agustin Church and the Manila Cathedral.

Rizal Park: A Tribute to a National Hero

Rizal Park is both a memorial to Dr. José Rizal and a green refuge—perfect for an easy stroll before sunset.

Manila Bay: One of the World’s Best Sunsets

Join locals along Manila Bay for a sunset many rank among the planet’s finest—orange melting into purple above boats on the horizon. A seafront walk or café table at golden hour is essential.

The Mind Museum – Science Meets Fun

Located in Bonifacio Global City, The Mind Museum is one of Manila’s most fascinating attractions. Inside, you can explore five main galleries: Atom, Earth, Life, Universe, and Technology. A highlight for many visitors is the massive Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, along with other dinosaur skeletons, which make the museum a favorite spot for both kids and adults. From space exhibits to interactive science displays, it’s a perfect blend of learning and fun.

Where We Stayed (Personal Note)

We based ourselves in Makati, around E. Mercado Corner F. Calderon Street. It felt safe and convenient for getting around. Our cost was about $200 per night for two.

What to Eat

  • Adobo – vinegar-soy braised meat, a beloved staple.
  • Halo-halo – a colorful, icy dessert for tropical heat.
  • Ultra-ripe mangoes from street vendors.

Taal – Compact Volcano, Huge Views

About two hours from Manila, Taal Volcano is one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes—and the views from its rim are unforgettable.

Getting There

Head to Tagaytay, then cross the crater lake by boat. Boatmen tend to open with high quotes: we were first told ₱5,000, but negotiated to ₱2,400bargaining is essential. From the drop-off, it’s a short ascent to the rim.

At the Rim

The emerald crater lake looks otherworldly from above—easily one of the Philippines’ must-see vistas.

Personal Note: I visited a year before the January 2020 eruption, after which access rules fluctuated for a while. Nature is powerful and unpredictable—always check the latest local guidance.

Tips

  • Light clothing and sturdy shoes help on dusty paths.
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection.
  • Not into hiking? Horse rides to the rim are available.

Boracay – Island of White Sands

Boracay is famed for powdery beaches, clear waters and a lively yet laid-back vibe.

White Beach

The island’s hub. Swim and sunbathe by day, then watch the sky blaze at dusk and dine right on the sand.

Personal Note

Boracay felt like a slice of paradise—few places match its natural beauty. We stayed in Station 2 with super easy beach access and paid about $300 per night for two. Sipping fresh tropical mixed juice on a lounger, just watching the colors shift over the water… priceless.

Things to Do

  • Parasailing
  • Kitesurfing
  • Scuba diving & snorkeling tours
  • Island-hopping by boat

Nightlife

Bars, live music and beach parties keep the shoreline buzzing well into the night.

Getting Between Manila, Taal & Boracay

  • Manila → Taal: ~2 hours by road to Tagaytay. The most economical method is the bus from Manila to Tagaytay—we used the bus ourselves and it was very budget-friendly—then take a boat across the crater lake. Prefer a car? Grab/Uber (shared) options run about ₱4,000.
  • Manila → Boracay: ~1 hour flight, then a quick boat transfer.
  • Taal → Boracay: Return to Manila first, then fly.

Practical Tips

  • Best time: Dry season, roughly December–May.
  • Language: English is widely spoken.
  • Currency: Philippine Peso (PHP).
  • Safety: Tourist zones in Manila are generally safe; outside them, pickpocketing can occur—stay alert.
  • Health: In Manila and Boracay there’s typically no malaria concern; sunscreen and repellent still recommended.
  • Smoking Warning (Personal Experience): Lighters are confiscated at airport entry—do not bring expensive or sentimental lighters. Outside designated smoking areas, even outdoors, police may appear suddenly; fines around $150 have been cited. If you put it out immediately and apologize, you might avoid a fine—but don’t risk it.
